Gatsby Adds a New Suburban Style to Hollywood

From CurbedLA by Dakota
With an exterior that’s markedly different-looking than anything else in this Hollywood neighborhood, the Gatsby Hollywood, that new 34-unit townhome project at the corner of Wilcox and Fountain, is now showing off its furnished model unit, and this past Sunday, the sales office was surprisingly busy. Hopping on a 4th of July weekend. The development, which is in its first phase–currently they are selling 12 units–has units priced from $669,000 and up. Post recent price cuts, a $939,000 unit is now $789,000, while a $873,000 unit is now $769,000. Notably, there are many energy saving features in the homes, including solar panels. Daniel S. Thompson, CEO of Newport Beach-based MasterCraft Homes, talked to us a bit about getting the city to sign off on the panels, a process that was difficult only because the LAFD wasn’t used to working with panels (seen in last photo*) and had to come out and do multiple fire drill exercise drills with the panels (for instance, walking on them). According to the sales sheet, five of the 12 units are in escrow.
Hollywood’s Business Improvement District To Grow
By DEBORAH CROWE Los Angeles Business Journal Staff
The Los Angeles City Council has endorsed the Hollywood property owners’ vote to renew and expand the Hollywood Entertainment District for a 10-year period through the end of 2018.
The ballot tabulation, which was conducted by the Office of the City Clerk, resulted in an estimated 91 percent affirmative vote by property owners for renewal of the District, making the HED one of the more heavily supported business improvement districts in the Los Angeles area, officials said.
Property assessments will fund a $3.4 million-a-year budget for the district. The district pays for security, maintenance and marketing services that have helped drive Hollywood’s revitalization efforts.
The Live/Work Movement Grows

MOST weekday mornings, Robert Levine rolls out of bed, takes a shower, has breakfast and, come 8:30, lets in his staff. Levine, owner of Evolving Ideas Inc., a marketing firm that creates print materials for restaurant chains, retailers and others, lives and works in Hollywood loft space. “I enjoy working and put a lot of effort into what I do,” said Levine, who is single and in his early 60s. “Twenty years ago, when I had two distinct spaces, I considered the office my second home. The difference is that then I had to drive 25 miles to get there.”
